What does Shopify actually cost? Every fee explained

July 17, 2026 · 6 min · ScaleLab

Shopify's pricing page shows three numbers, but a real store's monthly cost is a stack: plan, payment fees, apps, theme and sometimes development. None of it is hidden, but it is scattered — so here is the whole stack in one place, with realistic totals for different store sizes.

01Plans: what each tier actually buys

Basic covers a functioning store and is where most new merchants should start. Grow adds lower payment fees and more staff accounts. Advanced buys better shipping rates, custom reporting and the lowest standard card fees — its math works when volume makes the fee difference exceed the plan difference.

The rule of thumb: upgrade when the payment-fee savings pay for the upgrade. For most stores that crossover is a revenue milestone, not a feature need — Basic is not a limitation on ambition.

02Payment fees: the cost that scales with you

Card fees are a percentage plus a fixed amount per transaction, decreasing with plan tier. Using a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments adds an extra platform fee — which is why almost everyone uses Shopify Payments where it is available.

At meaningful volume, payment fees dwarf the subscription: a store doing $100k a month pays a few hundred in subscription and thousands in processing. That ratio is normal — but it means fee percentage, not plan price, is where negotiation and tier choice actually matter.

03Apps and themes: the variable middle

A premium theme is a one-time purchase and is almost always better economics than a custom build at the start. Apps are the budget item that creeps: review apps, email, upsells, subscriptions — each reasonable alone, collectively often several hundred a month.

Audit the app stack quarterly. Stores accumulate apps the way houses accumulate drawers of cables — and every app is also a script tag that can slow the storefront. Fewer, better apps is both a cost and a speed strategy.

04Realistic monthly totals

A starting store: plan plus a handful of apps — roughly $50–150 a month before payment processing. An established store on Grow with a serious app stack: $300–800. A scaling store on Advanced with ERP connections and premium tooling: $1,000–3,000, still usually far below the equivalent self-hosted operation once maintenance is priced.

The framing that matters: Shopify's cost is overwhelmingly variable, scaling with revenue rather than ahead of it. You pay more when you earn more — which is exactly the cost structure a growing store wants.
