Shopify Plus: when is it actually worth it?

June 28, 2026 · 6 min · ScaleLab

Shopify Plus costs a multiple of the Advanced plan, and the honest answer to whether it's worth it is: it depends on which of its capabilities you would actually use. Plus is not a faster version of Shopify — it is a different set of controls. Here is what those controls are worth, and to whom.

01What Plus actually unlocks

The headline capability is checkout extensibility: custom logic, fields and branding in the one flow standard plans lock down. Alongside it: Launchpad for scheduled campaigns, Shopify Flow automation at full depth, B2B with company accounts and price lists, expansion stores for international markets, and meaningfully lower payment fees at volume.

The support tier changes too — a dedicated contact and priority handling, which matters more than it sounds the first time checkout misbehaves during your biggest campaign.

02The revenue math

The mechanical case: lower card fees at high volume can offset much of the plan cost by themselves. Stores in the low millions annually start seeing that math work; below that, the fee savings rarely carry the price alone.

But fee math is the weakest reason to upgrade. The strong reasons are operational: you run frequent large campaigns, sell B2B alongside D2C, operate multiple markets, or lose measurable conversion to a checkout you cannot touch.

03Who shouldn't upgrade

A store growing comfortably on Advanced, with no B2B motion, one market and no checkout pain has no Plus case yet — the capabilities would sit unused while the invoice arrives monthly. Plus solves scale problems; it does not create scale.

The common mistake is upgrading for prestige or 'headroom'. Shopify's standard plans handle serious volume without breaking — the ceiling that matters is capability, not capacity.

04How to decide

Write down the three concrete things you would do in the first quarter on Plus — specific automations, checkout changes, B2B price lists, market launches. Price their impact. If the list is vague, the answer is not yet; if it is specific and the numbers clear the plan cost, the answer is obvious.

And time it: upgrading two months before peak season gives you Launchpad and checkout control when they pay most. Upgrading in January because the sales call was good gives you an invoice.
