Klarna and Swish on Shopify: what's built in and what isn't

Klarna and Swish aren't third-party apps you install on top of Shopify — both are local payment methods inside Shopify Payments. But built in doesn't mean automatically ready: which generation of the Klarna integration an account lands in, and whether Swish can be enabled at all, depends on where the store is based, which currency it runs, and when the account was created.

01Are Klarna and Swish built in, or do you have to add them yourself?

Both are activated from inside Shopify Payments rather than through a standalone app — the requirement is that the store is based in Sweden and checks out in SEK, otherwise neither method appears as an option. Swish is switched on under Settings → Payments → Shopify Payments → Manage payment methods with a single toggle; Klarna additionally requires its own Klarna account linked through Klarna's own portal, not just a checkbox.

The difference matters for how fast you can get started: a store already running Shopify Payments for Sweden can typically enable Swish the same day, while the Klarna connection depends on how quickly Klarna's own review of the business goes. New, eligible Shopify Payments accounts get Klarna switched on by default from the start, for what it's worth — it isn't always a manual step.

02What does it mean that the Klarna integration is 'legacy'?

Shopify labels the current Klarna-as-local-payment-method integration for Sweden, Germany and Austria a legacy version, signaling that a newer generation of the connection exists or is on the way. That shows up concretely in dispute handling: stores that activated Klarna on or before September 26, 2025 follow a different process for disputes opened before that date than stores that activated it afterward.

For a store that already has Klarna active, the practical takeaway is to know which generation the account actually belongs to before the next dispute comes up, rather than assuming the process is the same as last year. It's exactly the kind of detail that's easy to miss because everything at checkout works as normal until a dispute actually happens.

03Where Swish's limits are — refunds and subscriptions

Swish has no chargeback mechanism: customers can't go through their bank to reverse a Swish payment the way they can with a card, and funds are captured immediately and added to the next available payout. That lowers fraud risk for the merchant, but it also shifts the entire burden of any refund onto the store to handle manually in the Shopify admin — there's no automatic dispute process to fall back on if something goes wrong.

Swish also can't be used for subscription products or other recurring orders, which is worth knowing at the product-setup stage rather than discovering at launch. A store selling both one-off products and subscriptions needs to offer card or Klarna specifically for the subscription portion of the catalog.

04The requirements that decide whether the methods actually show up at checkout

Beyond being Sweden-based and checking out in SEK, Shopify sets concrete requirements on the store's own content before either method appears at checkout. Swish requires completed identity verification, a clear refund policy, accurate product descriptions, a storefront that isn't password-protected or in private mode, and an approved merchant category code for the business.

Klarna carries similar visible-information requirements: a business registration number, contact details, delivery methods, return instructions, a withdrawal policy, product descriptions and customer reviews all need to be findable on the site. If any of that is missing, Klarna can be declined or switched off even though it's technically enabled in Shopify Payments — an easy-to-miss reason when a store suddenly can't figure out why a payment method stopped showing up.
