Google Ads for Shopify: your feed is the campaign
April 30, 2026 · 6 min · ScaleLab
Meta advertising is won with creative. Google Shopping is won with data: your product feed decides which searches you appear for, at what price presentation, against which competitors. Most Shopify stores ship the default feed and wonder why results are mediocre.
01The feed is targeting
Shopping and Performance Max match queries against your product titles, descriptions and attributes. A title like 'Aria — Small' matches nothing; 'Gold-plated hoop earrings 25 mm — Aria' matches every relevant search a buyer types.
Rewriting titles front-loaded with what people search — product type, material, key attribute — is routinely one of the highest-ROI actions in the entire account.
02Structure PMax so you can steer it
Performance Max wants to be a black box; your job is to add glass. Segment by margin or product role — heroes, bestsellers, longtail — so budget flows to economics, not just to whatever converts easiest.
Feed the machine real inputs: audience signals from buyer lists, creative assets per segment, and negative lists that keep brand traffic honest.
03Own your brand terms deliberately
Brand search is your cheapest, highest-converting traffic — and the easiest place to fool yourself, since much of it would convert anyway. Separate brand from non-brand everywhere so growth reporting reflects new demand, not recycled demand.
If competitors bid on your brand, defend deliberately and price it into the channel's true efficiency.
04Where Google fits next to Meta
Meta creates demand; Google harvests it. The channels look competitive in a last-click report and cooperative in reality — which is why judging them in isolation misallocates budget.
Run them as one system with shared measurement, and let MER arbitrate what the platforms argue about.
